Cultural Leadership Fellowship Stories

Portugal 2024

Last summer, Portugal was a hit! We knew we had to do it again! Eighteen fellows took off to Lisbon and Porto for an incredible adventure.

Fellows started in Lisbon with a walking tour of the city's history and architecture. They enjoyed a sunset boat ride along the coast and visited Sintra, and participated in many activities including a cooking class.

Next, they traveled to Porto for the São João Festival, joining in the celebrations with street parties and grilled sardines, rounding out an unforgettable experience!

Raul, Cheska and Ana's experience

Raul: “I am forever grateful to the Cultural Leadership Fellowship for giving me the opportunity to see a part of the world I often felt was unattainable. The fellowship was a profound and transformative experience. Even more, I had the privilege of sharing it with other DACA recipients from across the country who, despite sharing similar backgrounds, each brought their own unique stories. Not a day will go by that I won't think about this extraordinary group of individuals, as they continue to write their own life stories, yearning for a future where borders do not define one’s worth or opportunities. This fellowship was not just a physical voyage but an emotional one, reconnecting me with my roots and my dreams. Traveling outside the US felt like reclaiming a piece of my identity that had been long denied. I met a different version of myself—a more confident, inspired, free, and happy version. I found my excitement and will for living as I finally stood on foreign soil, breathing in the air of possibilities beyond the borders that had constrained me for so long. My heart is full, and I’m more determined than ever to keep it that way.To Scholar Fund, CLF, and the tireless individuals who keep it running—thank you! You are the stars, and none of this could have been possible without your continued efforts.”

Cheska:  “The fellowship gave me my first opportunity to travel abroad on Advance Parole, allowing me to explore Europe and its diverse cultures and institutions. Experiencing the rich history, varied traditions, and efficient public transportation firsthand enriched my worldview and challenged my understanding of what's possible. This journey broadened my perspective and inspired me to envision new possibilities for my family, community, and future.Celebrating the São João festival in Porto — with traditions from playfully bopping festival-goers with tiny toy hammers and eating caldo verde and sardines, to lighting lanterns that beautifully illuminated the night sky above the Douro River — created memories with the fellows I'll never forget.”

Ana: “The Cultural Leadership Fellowship changed my life. Growing up undocumented, my biggest and wildest dreams were to travel the world. CLF allowed me to go on an incredible journey that not only healed my inner child but also honored it. I got the privilege to learn about new cultures, savor new dishes, dance to new music, swim in foreign oceans, see famous art, and meet wonderful people from all over the globe. This opportunity rejuvenated my appreciation for life and its beauty, particularly during a critical time in my life. I was lucky enough share this transformational experience with a cohort of people who understand the magnitude of our presence in these spaces. I am forever thankful for this program!”
