Cultural Leadership Fellowship Stories

Latin America 2023

The Cultural Leadership Fellowship took 19 DACA fellows from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, exploring vibrant neighborhoods and cultural landmarks.

They then traveled to Cusco, Peru, experiencing local culture and culminating the journey at Machu Picchu. The fellowship fostered a close-knit community, providing valuable cultural experiences, friendships, and memories to cherish!

Immense thank you to the hosts and guides that made this trip so special. Instagram tags below!

Alliyah, Gabby, & Gardenia's experience

Alliyah: “It was my first time doing AP and being in a community of this many DACA people. The fellowship was extremely helpful in guiding and streamlining the process of applying for AP, which eased my first-time jitters. My cohort and the leads became a tight-knit community that provided me strength to step out of my comfort zone through my travels in Peru and Brazil, from trying new foods native to the Andean landscape to learning the basics of Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian histories. I'm happy to have made new friends from this program. Most of all, we had so much fun! Thank you, CLF, for creating this fellowship that is truly for us!”

Gabby: “My experience in the Cultural Leadership Fellowship was one that brought me lots of healing and joy. This trip empowered me to imagine freely and outside the US borders. Moreover, it allowed me to reconnect with family, travel to places I never thought I would see, and witness the joy of other undocumented folks. I am super fortunate to have experienced this journey with incredible and caring people who made this experience unforgettable! I have with me many invaluable memories that I will treasure forever.”

Gardenia: "“I don’t have words to describe my experience with the Cultural Fellowship Latin America cohort. It was more of a feeling, so many things at one time. It is as beautiful, freeing, and healing for me. Being in community with others who understood what being undocumented meant without me having to explain, made me feel seen. We got to learn and see the beautiful culture of Brazil and Peru. I never thought that I would get the chance to see two of the Wonders of the World. I came back home with more gratitude and happiness in my heart. This trip is something I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life.”
